2-Day Seminar Course Description

This 2-day course will include the same topics as the more comprehensive 24-hour course but will not allow for thorough discussions related to each topic due to the tighter time restraint. This course will identify the many benefits of the geometric system of tolerancing based on ASME Y14.5M-1994 standard. Participants will discover cost savings at the design, manufacturing and inspection stages of the organization as a result of the proper application and implementation of the GD&T system. This course will enable participants to understand and speak the “language” of GD&T. Participants will learn how to:

• Recognize and apply bonus geometric tolerances
• Easily rework parts to meet requirements
• Use functional gauges to effectively verify geometric requirements
• Recognize extra tolerances from referenced datums
• Inspect geometric tolerances using conventional measuring equipment
• Recognize why good parts may be rejected when using the coordinate measuring machine (CMM)
• Identify which standard was used in creating the drawing, and identify the main differences between the most common standards used.

1. Introduction to the Symbols, Terms and Definitions

• Advantages of the Geometric System of Tolerancing
• Material Condition Modifiers
• ISO, ANSI and ASME Drawing Standards
• Feature Definition—with and without size
• Feature Control Frame

2. Rules and Boundaries Concepts

• Rule No. 1 and No. 2
• Virtual Condition
• Inner and Outer Worst Case Boundaries
• Basic Dimensions and Bonus Tolerances
• Recognizing when functional gauges may be used

3. Form Tolerances

• Flatness
• Straightness applied to Surfaces
• Straightness applied to Features of Size
• Circularity and Cylindricity

4. Datums

• Datum Reference Frame (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Datums)
• The 3-2-1 Rule
• Coplanar Datum Features
• Establishing Datums from Features of Size
• Coaxial Datum Features
• Effects of Datum Modifiers (Calculating Datum Shift)
• Referencing Patterns as Datum Features

5. Orientation Tolerances

• Perpendicularity, Angularity and Parallelism
• Effects of the Tangent Plane Modifier

6. Location Controls

• Proper Application of Tolerance of Position, Concentricity and Symmetry
• Effects of the MMC, LMC and RFS Modifiers with Tolerance of Position
• Locating single and multiple features with tolerance of position
• Positional tolerance of coaxial features
• Differences in Concentricity requirements as defined in the ANSI Y14.5M-1982 standard, ISO and ASME Y14.5M-1994 standard.

7. Runout and Profile Tolerances

• Characteristics Controlled with Runout and Profile
• Proper Application of Runout and Profile
• Unilateral and Bilateral Profile tolerances
• Common inspection methods used to verify Runout and Profile requirements
• Uniqueness of Profile as Compared to all other Geometric Characteristic Symbols

In addition to the topics covered above, participants will be issued numerous exercises which will be completed and corrected at the training sessions.
